Explore Intown at Christmastime H ow many of us Maconites have attended an event sponsored by the Intown Macon Neighborhood Association, yet how many of us are not familiar with the history and mission of the organization? In the 1960s and '70s, economic conditions shifted residential real estate value and demand away from downtown toward North Macon. In 1974, several downtown homeowners recognized the impending danger to the unique historic nature of Macon's downtown residential neighborhoods and organized with a mission to save these historic homes. Both the Intown Macon Neighborhood Association and the Macon Heritage Foundation (now Historic Macon Foundation) resulted from the grassroots movement, and were able to get the downtown Macon neighborhoods listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Intown Macon endures as a nonprofit organization comprised of downtown homeowners and residential preservationists fervently loyal to the cause, and yet always ready to enjoy a cocktail together on the latest circa 1880s porch most recently saved by our efforts. Join us at this year's 2018 Christmas Tour of Homes to view the beautiful historic homes you have helped save. Intown Macon Neighborhood Association's 2018 Holiday Tour of Homes will be Dec. 8-9. Tour eight historic homes within easy walking distance of the intersection of College Street and Georgia Avenue. Join us from 6-8 p.m. Dec. 8 for a family caroling event; visit houses on the tour and enjoy refreshments. For information and tickets, visit intownmacon.com. – Brooke Merrill
