O C T O B E R / N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 8 M A C O N M A G A Z I N E | 3 9 Fall is here. Listen up, bibliophiles! M acon's best book sale is now happening twice a year. The Friends of the Library will hold a Fall Book Sale in October, to go along with their popular Used Book Sale that happens every March. "We decided to move to two sales a year because we outgrew our old location, and it was not available for us to use twice a year," said Mary Ann Lee, book sale chair. "It's very exciting for us to have so many books that we need to have a second sale!" That second sale will happen from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Oct. 18-19 and 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Oct. 20 at 2720 Riverside Drive. A special Friends of the Library members-only sale will happen from 4-7 p.m. Oct. 17. The sale benefits the local library system. Since its inception in 1966, Friends of the Library has donated well over $1 million to Macon-Bibb County libraries. For more information about the organization or the sale, visit friendsofthelibrarymacon.com. Allison Yarrow to speak about the '90s and feminism A ward-winning journalist and National Magazine Award finalist Allison Yarrow will return to her hometown of Macon at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 to speak about her new book, "90s Bitch: Media, Culture and the Failed Promise of Gender Equality." In her book, Yarrow reexamines the stories that were told and sold about women during the decade – ones that shaped the Millennial generation – and explores how the era was actually a toxic period for women, undermining the feminist progress of the decades before. Now a resident of Brooklyn, New York, Yarrow is the daughter of Dr. James Gaudet and Jami Gaudet. She has written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, Vox, as well as other news outlets. She was a TED resident and is a grantee of the International Women's Media Foundation. She has appeared on the "Today" show, MSNBC, NPR and more. The free event is co-hosted by Georgia Women (And Those Who Stand With Us) and Temple Sha'arey Israel, and will be held at the temple. Get more information about the event at gawomenstand.com.
